1998 Tony Award Winner

For his Outstanding Performance in

"A View From The Bridge"

This is an Arthur Miller play starring Anthony LaPaglia. The December 20th, 1997 performance was attended by Foxfire, tOrchie, and Langolier at the Roundabout Theatre. We were all moved by the superbly intense production and enthusiastically recommend it for any person interested in seeing the best that theatre has to offer.

Anthony LaPaglia gave his final award winning performance as Eddie Carbone in "A View From the Bridge" on July 19th, 1998 at the Neil Simon Theatre. We hope to see Mr. LaPaglia on the New York stage in the near future.

"Anthony LaPaglia gives the performance of a lifetime!" New York Post.  Will this be the year of the "Tony" for Anthony?  DEFINITELY YES!  His fine performance and that of his fellow cast members were recognized in four Tony Nominations: Best Actor in A Play (Anthony), Best Actress in A Play, Best Revival of A Play and Best Director!

Reuters/Variety says:
"With his stocky build, sandpaper voice and dewy, jittery eyes, LaPaglia provides a firm center for the production, playing Eddie as a guilt ridden guy who sacrifices everything without understanding why."

New York Times Review:
By Ben Bratley- "The gesture is so small, so prosaic that is should be utterly forgettable.  A Middle-aged man, with a gruff but affectionate air of paternalism, is lecturing his pretty 17-year-old niece.  He puts his hands on her waist, as if to confirm the goodwill behind his advice, then pulls them back. The conversation continues as before."

"There is nothing inherently alarming in the scene, is there?  It's not exactly the stuff that tragedies are made of.  Yet this fragment of an encounter, which occurs early in the first-rate new revival of Arthur Miller's "View From The Bridge," sends off a subliminal alarm that keeps getting louder as the play goes on.  And as directed by Michael Mayer for the Roundabout Theatre Company, with a cast that approaches perfection, the evening is etched throughout with precise, unobtrusive physical details that find the seeds of destruction in the seemingly insignificant."

To Al:  Thanks for the memories!

The Tony Award Nominees Brunch was held May 13th, 1998 at Sardi's Restaurant.  Asked how he relaxed after his emotionally wrenching performance, Robert Simonson of Playbill On-Line quotes Anthony as saying: "After I spill my guts on stage every night, I am relaxed."

Anthony hosted the Drama League Awards May 8th, 1998.  "A View" was nominated for Distinguished Revival Of A Play, Anthony LaPaglia was named an Outstanding Artist In A Play for the 1997-98 season along with Allison Janey and Brittany Murphy.  Well deserved recognition for all three!  The Drama League is New York's oldest theatrical organization.

Mr. LaPaglia very graciously allowed Foxfire to be photographed with him.

Foxfire review: (Dec '97)
Eddie Carbone is an over protective uncle who has not faced the fact that his beloved niece Catherine is growing up.  Anthony's mesmerizing presence draws the audience into Eddie's desperate story.  While he attempts to stop Catherine from falling in love with the wrong man, his wife Beatrice begins to notice a strange and frightening side of him.  When he feels himself trapped in an impossible situation, Eddie finally does the unthinkable and seals his fate.  Although Eddie is not a sympathetic character,  a sensitive actor like Anthony LaPaglia is able to find the humanity in him.  Anthony also seems to have the natural ability to generate a rush of emotions with which the audience can identify and provides a spectacular anchor for the play. The production is wonderfully staged and the cast well selected!

(May '98)
The Tony nomination seems to have intensified Anthony's energy level and spiked the energy of the supporting cast as well.  Any pressure brought by the nomination has been forged into his superb performance! Bravo!  These actors have earned the many awards that have been showered on them.  The play re-opened April 15th at the Neil Simon Theatre and performances will continue through July 19th, 1998.
